Obituary

Devoted father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, Joseph Michael McDonough passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Joe was born on August 22, 1936, to Bartley Gerard McDonough and Victoria Pittman McDonough.
He attended Judge Memorial High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, and later the University of Utah, where he was a competitive skier, winning several championships in both downhill and Giant Slalom. Joe was selected as an alternate for the U.S. Ski Team in Men's Downhill. It was at the University of Utah that he met his sweetheart, Linda Kohler, and the two were married in Honolulu, Hawaii, on July 23, 1962.
Joe served in the United States Navy Reserves. Their first child, David, was born while they were in Hawaii, and soon after moving to Salt Lake City, their daughter Kelly was born. Four years later, their son John joined the family.
Joe worked for the Utah Highway Department and Peter Kiewit & Sons in Salt Lake City, contributing to major projects like the Virgin River Gorge, Devils Slide, and many other highways in Utah, Wyoming, and Nevada.
A passionate outdoorsman, Joe loved hunting deer, pheasant, dove, and duck. He was an avid competitor in skeet and trap shooting at the Utah Gun Club.
In the summer of 1976, Joe moved his family to Las Vegas, Nevada, to pursue a new career with Wells Cargo. It was there that he began off-road racing, which quickly became a family affair. His racing career earned him the nickname "Endo Joe."
Joe lost his beloved wife, Linda, to cancer in 1989. Years later, he married his friend Judy Cook on February 13, but they later divorced, though they remained close friends.
Joe had a deep love for classical music, women's Super-G skiing, and downhill ski racing.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bartley and Victoria McDonough; his wife Linda McDonough; brothers Bartly, James "Pat," Robert, and Thomas; sister Marie; and granddaughter Linda "Dani" Prescott.
Joe is survived by his children, David McDonough (Ann), Kelly Jackson, and John McDonough (Kim); 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Affectionately known as "Poppa Joe," he will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation.
A Celebration of Life will be held on March 29th from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. with an open house at Desert Shores Clubhouse, 2500 Regatta Drive.
