Obituary

Karen Kay Graham, born in Chelsea, Iowa, passed away surrounded by love on December 14, 2023. She graduated from Belle Plaine High School in 1961 and pursued her passion for nursing at the Mercy School of Nursing in Cedar Rapids, IA. Karen dedicated her career to caring for children as a pediatric nurse at Meriter Hospital in Madison, WI. Following her retirement, she continued her commitment to compassion as a devoted volunteer at the Dane County Humane Society. Karen found joy in many hobbies and interests throughout her life. An avid traveler, she explored new places and cherished the memories created during her adventures. She had a fondness for reading and a special affinity for watching dog shows on TV or attending them in person. Karen was particularly passionate about volunteering at the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, UT, where her love for animals shone brightly. Known for her compassion and zest for life, Karen had a special connection with her niece Peggy in Las Vegas. She enjoyed playing slot machines, never wagering more than 25 cents or spending beyond $20. Miraculously, Karen always left Las Vegas a winner, keeping her victories to herself. Her love for road trips was unparalleled, provided the scenic route was taken, with frequent stops for snacks and tourist attractions along the way. Above all, Karen cherished her family, but her deepest love was reserved for her two dogs, Maddy and Lily. Karen is survived by her loving nieces and nephews: Peggy (Tony) Ricevuto, Heather (Darren) Rausch, Laura (Patrick) Tandy, Linda Bevins, James (Judy Humphrey), Mark (Jill) Gordon, Nicholas Gordon, and their families. She is predeceased by her parents, Lowell and Emma Graham, her sisters Wilma Bevins, Roberta Howes, Zina Gordon, brothers-in-law Keith Bevins, Charles Gordon, niece Sheryal Bevins, nephews Gary Bevins, David Bevins, and her fur baby Maddy. A service of cremation has taken place, and family interment will occur at a later date. The family suggests memorial donations to be made in Karen's honor to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary (www.bestfriends.org ) or Dane County Humane Society (www.giveshelter.org/memorial ). Heartfelt gratitude is extended to Dr. Tiffany Glazier at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for her skilled surgical care, which provided three additional years with our special aunt. Special thanks are also offered to Karen's wonderful neighbors and friends, Bill and Doris, for their unwavering support, taking care of snow removal, watching over her house, and ensuring she could travel without worries. Their care, concern, and companionship were deeply appreciated.
