Obituary

Leonard 'Len' Yates of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away on July 15, 2023 at the age of 86 from complications of Parkinson's Disease. Born on January 24, 1937 in Memphis, Tennessee to Leonard and Cordelia Yates, he was the eldest of four children. He attended Humes High School and graduated in 1956. His claim to fame was attending high school with Elvis Presley. He met his first wife, JoAnne, in 1953 while working as a delivery driver for Woolworth's drug store. They married on June 15, 1958 in Memphis and went on to have three children together, one son and two daughters. In July of 1958, Len began his 47 year career with Delta Airlines as an aircraft mechanic. In 1960, he enlisted in the United States Army and served 13 months, being honorably discharged in 1961 due to his father becoming ill. In 1977, he transferred to the maintenance department at McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas and moved his family out there. He eventually worked his way up to lead mechanic and then to foreman. In his younger years, Len enjoyed softball, bowling, hunting and fishing with friends, and camping and hiking with the boy scouts and his family. He became Scoutmaster for Troop 6 in 1979 and to no surprise, became a positive influence to many, young and old. During his tenure in Scouting, he earned the nickname 'Reb' because he was from the South and had a southern accent. He was awarded the district Award of Merit for outstanding service to youth, and toward the end of his tenure, he was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for his continued, unselfish, effective service to the community. Len loved volunteering and helping others. In addition to scouting, he volunteered a considerable amount of his time at the schools his children attended and was part of the schools' PTA, even becoming president of the PTA at one point. After retiring from Delta Airlines in 2005, he was a crossing guard for several years, a job that he absolutely loved doing. Len's first wife JoAnne passed away on May 19, 2012, after almost 54 years of marriage. To fill his time, he volunteered at the West Flamingo Senior Center. There, he met his second wife, Barbara, in April of 2013. They married on November 6, 2013. During their time together, they traveled extensively, enjoyed games at the senior center, and loved spending time with family. Len was a kind, caring, generous, unselfish man who made an impact on many lives. He loved to laugh and had a huge sense of humor. He was strong-willed and stern at times, yet had a heart of gold and loved his family immensely. He adored his grandchildren, and enjoyed spending time with them and passing his wisdom on. There are not enough words to express the love that his family and friends had for him. He will be greatly missed. Len is survived by his second wife Barbara, his children Jeff (Ronetta) Yates, Melissa Yates, Jennifer (Ryan) Sherer, his step-daughter Melanie Angeles, his grandchildren Noah Yates, Samuel (Skylar) Goodall-Yates, Vinny Vaccaro, Eric Vaccaro, his step-grandchildren Alyana Barton, Brendon Barton, Halen Smith, and his sister Julie Booth. He is preceded in death by his first wife JoAnne, his step-son Jason Barton, his father and mother Leonard and Cordelia Yates, and his brothers Bobby and Charley Yates. No services are planned.
