Maile Kehaulani Kauhane Hallums was born on February 21, 1945 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Annie and Samuel Kauhane. After graduating from Kamehameha Schools in 1963, she became a member of the United States Navy. She was married to David Hallums until 1972 and later to Herman R. Smith until 1984. She was the 9th child of 11 siblings: Viola, Samuel Jr., Odetta, Elias, Josephine, Clayton, Haunani, Pualoke, Naomi and Noelani. She is survived by sister Naomi Kauhane; daughters Cheryl Hallums-Diaz (Tony), Leilani Hart (Craig), and Pi'ilani Lee Kauhane; sons Kawika (Denise), Kalani (Pili) and Kalola (Miyo); hanai son Kekoa, hanai daughter Luella and daughter in-law Annette. 22 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Maile passed away on January 10, 2025 peacefully at home in Henderson, Nevada at the age of 79, surrounded by family. Services will be held in her beloved home in Hawaii on a later date in February.
