Obituary

Melvin “Mel” Merrill Baron passed away on July 3, 2026, leaving behind a lifetime of memories, kindness, and quiet strength. Born on September 10, 1945, to Harry and Katherine Baron, Mel’s life was one marked by service, optimism, and an enduring love for family and friends.

Mel grew up in Levittown, Pennsylvania, and the Philadelphia area, where he developed a lifelong love of Philadelphia sports, especially the Phillies. He graduated from high school in the Philadelphia area before earning an Associate’s degree from Temple University. As an adult, he made his home in San Diego, California, and later settled in Las Vegas, Nevada.

A proud American, Mel honorably served in the United States Navy from 1966 to 1969 before continuing his commitment to his country in the United States Navy Reserve. He carried the values of duty, loyalty, and integrity with him throughout his life.

Mel’s passion for sports extended beyond being a fan. He wrote boxing and sports columns for several sports publications, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for the sports he loved. An avid Philadelphia Phillies fan and devoted follower of boxing, he also enjoyed collecting sports cards and memorabilia, finding great pleasure in preserving pieces of sports history and sharing his passion with fellow collectors.

Las Vegas became a place Mel truly loved. He enjoyed the energy of the city, spending time at the casino, attending shows, and buying and selling sports cards and memorabilia at collector conventions.

Those who knew Mel will always remember his warm smile, positive attitude, and gentle spirit. He had an easy way about him that made people feel welcome, and he faced life with optimism, resilience, and a kind heart. His quiet generosity and genuine warmth left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

Mel was preceded in death by his brother, Ron Baron. He is lovingly remembered by his sisters, Linda and Rosanne; his nephew, Gary (Lisa); his niece, Cindy; his nieces and nephews Eric, Sean, Kerry, and Kara; as well as many other beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will cherish his memory.

The family finds comfort in the many happy memories Mel leaves behind and in knowing that his kindness and spirit will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved him.

May his memory forever be a blessing.
