Obituary

The family of Melvin C. Gant, born March 31, 1942, to Amelia A. Gant in Birmingham, Alabama, sadly announce his passing on July 9, 2024.
Melvin's early education was in Birmingham. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Air Force, where he served in Korea. After leaving the Air Force, he moved to Los Angeles, California where he lived for 40+ years. While in L.A., he worked for the Los Angeles School Board, the L.A.P.D. and the D.W.P. After retiring from the D.W.P., he moved to Sacramento, California where he started a tax service. Education was Melvin's first love, and he was proud of what he achieved with his higher education.
Melvin was always the life of the party. He enjoyed people, and never met a stranger. Loved by many, hated by none. He was always there when you needed him; his family nicknames were Bro Daddy and Uncle Daddy.
Melvin leaves behind a loving son Greg Johnson (Jaemie), grandson Noah Johnson, granddaughter Megan Johnson, three sisters Janie Hubbard of Birmingham, AL, Ola Smith of Las Vegas, NV, and Rose Ingram of Birmingham, AL, two brothers Robert Hubbard (Cora) and Joe Hubbard (Andrea), both of Birmingham, AL. He also leaves behind his roommates of 20 years cousin Simon Gant and Lois Gant, a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
Melvin is preceded in death by his grandmother Lydia Taylor, mother Amelia A. Gant, and  two sisters Doris Bean, and Elizabeth Flowers.
A memorial service will be held in Melvin's honor on August 9, 2024, at 2pm at the Los Angeles Nation Cemetery. Arrival by 1:30pm is requested.
