Mildred Jean (Jones) Young passed away peacefully on July 27, 2025, after a journey with Alzheimer's disease. Up until the end Mildred (affectionately known as "Mildra Je'Nae" by her children and "big Mama" by her grand and great-grandchildren) maintained her kindness, grace, compassion, appreciation of beauty, love of family and friends, and expressed gratitude for her long life, full of wonderful and varied experiences.
Mildred's life can be best encapsulated by six "F" words: Faith, Family, Friends, Flowers, Food and Fun! Throughout her life she experienced an abundance of each.
Mildred was born in rural Tennessee on May 4, 1942, to Nelson Jones and Mary Ella Sledge, where she felt loved and very supported. She was the 5th of 12 children. After completing her elementary education, she attended Douglas High School in Memphis, TN. She excelled academically and socially. She spoke of fond memories of being a majorette and honing her hospitality skills in home economics class. She then attended Tennessee State University in Nashville, TN, graduation with a B.S. in business/finance. She pledged AKA sorority and was a member of the famous Tigerbelles Track Team.
She was introduced to Louis R Young Jr by her good friend and future sister-in-law, Kay Francis (Young) Solomon, at TSU. Louis and Mildred dated and later married on April 1, 1967, in Detroit, MI soon after the couple moved to Chicago, IL.
To this union 3 lovely children were born: Cassandra Young, Tasha Hall, and Byron Young. She had immense joy with the arrival of her 2 handsome grandsons Christian Andre and Kendall john, and her only beautiful granddaughter, Donyale Danita. She had 1 great-grandson, the illustrious Nathan Wheeler, her buddy. They sang together and enjoyed robust balloon fights from time to time.
Mildred excelled at creating a beautiful and gracious home which was comfortable for her family. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose void can never be filled.
Mildred worked at Evans Furs and American National Bank in Chicago. She also started her own hair studio, working as a trendsetting cosmetologist.
She was quite the social butterfly; she was a member of the Apostolic Church of God in Chicago, participated in a professional modeling trope, was an avid and award winning gardner (she and her late sister Gladys has an affinity for flowers and often asked each other, "how are your flowers looking?"), a culinary genius (them greens, mac n cheese and yams- yum yum!), a Chicago stepper extraordinaire, and loved to travel.
Mildred was preceded in death by her husband Louis R Young Jr, her grandson Christian Andre, brothers Cornelius and Nathaniel Jones, sisters Gladys Marks and Verline Mack, sisters-in-law Sara Clark and Carole Jones, niece Leah Clark, and nephews Ernest, Willie, and Sherman.
She is survived by her 3 children Cassandra, Tasha, and Byron, her 2 grandchildren Donayle and Kendall, her great-grandson Nathan, brothers Eddie, Larry (Donna) and Noble Jones (Irma), sisters Carrie Mae Sidney and Pearline Phillips, sisters-in-law Kay Solomon and Linda Young, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends who will never forget the love she brought to their lives.
One philosophy Mildred lived by: "Stay green so you will continue to grow!"
Her celebration of life will be held on august 7, 2025 at Care Cremation and Burial in Las Vegas, NV from 1 to 4pm.
Thessalonians 4:13-14
"But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as other do that have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep."
The family thanks all for their kind thoughts through this sad time.
