Mitchell J. Harris, affectionately known as "Jerome," passed away peacefully on July 3, 2025, at the age of 74.
Born in Chicago, Illinois to Robert and Ozzie Mae Harris, Jerome was the third of eleven siblings. From a young age, he showed a deep love for music, animals, and entrepreneurship-passions that would shape his life.
At 18, Jerome enlisted in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, receiving an honorable discharge in 1975. Upon returning home, he pursued a path of entrepreneurship, owning and operating several businesses throughout his life. He had a natural gift for fixing things-whether it was an engine or a broken faucet.
While living in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Jerome met and married Daphne Harris. Together, they raised four children: Mitchell, Miriam, Michelle, and stepdaughter Adrienne.
Jerome eventually made Flint, Michigan his home, where he became known not only for his automotive skills and handyman talent, but also for his love of guitar and his unforgettable storytelling. Whether sharing a joke, fixing a car, or strumming his favorite blues riffs, Jerome had a way of leaving an impression that lingered.
He is survived by his children Mitchell, Miriam, and Michelle; grandchildren Brayden, Princeton, Jaelynn, Joshua, and Harlem; and siblings Robert, Michael, Priscilla, Theresa, Mark, Matthew, Anthony, Corinthian, Samuel, and Dennis (deceased). He also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
Jerome will be remembered for his quiet strength and his resilience. As we reflect on his life, we carry his spirit forward. And in his own words, with that signature line-"In a minute."
