Obituary

Nancy Leigh Johnson - November 27, 1941 - January 6, 2025

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of our beloved Nancy Leigh Johnson.

Nancy was born and raised in upstate New York, in the small village of Montour Falls. She graduated from Odessa High School, and shortly thereafter, married Albert R. Johnson, Jr.

Nancy and Albert were pioneers in every sense of the word, as they left Montour Falls in Albert's 1957 Buick, and set out to see the country. They had planned to move to San Diego, but ultimately set down roots in Las Vegas in 1959, where they raised their family, grew their circle of friends, and made countless memories.

Nancy was a very kind-hearted and giving person. She loved spending time shopping with friends and family, as well as the occasional trip to a casino. But, anyone who knew Nancy, knew it was children that she enjoyed the most. Throughout her life, Nancy helped provide care for children of neighbors, her grandchildren, and great grandchildren. One such person whom she helped care for from infancy, is Charlie Fickes, whom she loved dearly, and considered as one of her own grandchildren.

When not helping raise children, Nancy could be found tending to her garden, and her huge yard. She was always a great source of information regarding which plants could thrive in the Las Vegas heat (and cold), and loved visiting the local nurseries. As the years past, she didn't let the fact that she no longer had a huge yard prevent her from enjoying plants. She simply moved her garden indoors, and surrounded herself with succulents and indoor foliage.

The week before her passing, Nancy requested that we have a family church service. Since she was unable to travel to a traditional church, her family brought the church service to her. Surrounded by family and friends (as well as shared via Zoom for family and friends located at a distance), Nancy was able to have her Sunday Family Church Service, complete with traditional bible verse readings, prayers, and music (selected by Nancy).

Nancy is predeceased by her husband, Albert R. Johnson, Jr., her parents, Irwin and Grayce Campbell, and her sisters, Janet Ayers, Phyllis Rodabaugh, and Sally Mollnow. She is survived by her daughters, Cindy (Paul) Brinkerhoff and Connie (Jason) Elliano, her brothers, Lewis (Allison) Campbell and James (Nancy) Campbell, her grandchildren, Nicole (Tom) Latiolait, Joseph (Christine) Forsythe, Amanda (Jason) Rosenberg, Lauren (Drew) Lane, Christopher Forsythe, and Anthony (Tricia) Forsythe, 11 great grandchildren, and many extended family members and close friends. Her life as a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend, and her favorite nickname(s), "Grandma the Great" and "Grandma Grape," will be celebrated in a private family gathering.

Finally, Nancy held charitable organizations related to Type 1 Diabetes (formerly JDRF) very close to her heart, as it has afflicted two of her great grandchildren, and the spouse of a grandson. It was her desire that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her memory to www2.breakthrought1d.org.
