Obituary

Ron "Ronnie" Szakara, beloved husband, father, and friend passed away on October 1st, 2025 at the age of 77. He was born November 17th, 1947 to Michael and Rose Szakara in Detroit, Michigan during the city's golden age when cars, music, and hard work made Detroit the heartbeat of America. And he grew up right in the middle of it all, falling in love with cars early on and working at Cadillac as a teenager. He was able to purchase his first car a few years later, a red 1965 Chevy Impala that he prized, but (according to one of his sons) eventually had to sell due to too many speeding tickets. Ron joined the Marine Reserves in 1967 and served until 1973 when his lifelong fascination with aviation inspired him to begin a new chapter at Delta Airlines. This also allowed him to finally escape the frigid Detroit winters (which he loathed) by relocating to Las Vegas, Nevada. Ron always respected the people on the tarmac more than anyone pushing paper in an office. Leadership to him meant showing up, doing your part, and most importantly treating everyone with respect. His unwavering blue-collar ethic led him to frequently turn down supervisory roles over this 26-year career at Delta. In the early 1990s, Ron became captivated by the personal computer revolution. What was seen as a curious hobby by most was a full-blown passion for Ron as he spent countless hours fixing and building computers. Within just a couple of self-taught years, there wasn't a machine he couldn't bring back to life. His expertise inspired him to open a small computer repair shop in Mesquite, NV where he found genuine joy repairing and building computers for the local community. In 2004, tragedy struck when Ron suffered a debilitating stroke that left him unable to speak and partially paralyzed. And although he relied heavily on his loving and ever-loyal wife to care for him for the last two decades of his life, he carried himself as if nothing could hold him back. Ron died peacefully in his home surrounded by family. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Geraldine; his two sons, Jeffrey (Las Vegas) and Joseph (Reno); Jeff's wife, Jody; and their two children, Zachary and Zoey - Ron's beloved grandchildren who always brightened his day when they came to visit. He also leaves behind his sister, Patricia (Rodney), of Cement City, Michigan, and his brother, Mark (Leslie), of Ortonville, Michigan, along with many cherished family members and close friends.
