Sally D.
Collins
Mar 15, 1933 — Nov 25, 2023
Sally Dilts Collins, 90, of Henderson, NV, passed away on November 25, 2023. Sally was born in Schenectady, NY to Harry and Edith Noble Dilts. Her birth mother died during childbirth of her sister, who also did not survive childhood. She was raised by her father, and stepmother, Naomi Geesler Dilts, and had two half-sisters, Donna and Joan Dilts, both of whom survive her. She married Milton Jacob Collins of Oneonta, NY on April 11, 1954, and the couple remained happily married for the next 69 years. Coincidentally, his older brother, Norman, was also married for 69 years - obviously a family tradition. They had four children, Diane Elizabeth, Deborah Ann, Denise Elaine, and David Wayne, all of whom survive her. Sally and Milt met while singing in the choir at Trinity Methodist Church in Schenectady - the director was also the director of her high school choir and Milt's college glee club. He wooed her by singing love songs to her while driving her home from choir practices. After their marriage and the birth of their first child, Sally received special permission to return to the nursing school at Ellis Hospital in Schenectady where she completed her basic nursing education. After brief residences in Herkimer, NY and Wilbraham, MA while Milt worked on highway construction, they moved to Naugatuck, CT. Sally began working as a nurse at Waterbury Hospital, and was urged to become a nursing instructor. To fully qualify, she obtained her BS in Nursing from the University of Connecticut and then began her full-time occupation as a nursing instructor. Milt's company moved him to Lynchburg, VA in 1975, where she continued teaching at the nursing school at Lynchburg General Marshall Lodge Hospital until 1988, when they relocated to Herndon in northern Virginia. She became the Financial Aid Director at Georgetown Medical School for the next three years before leaving to join with Milt in operating an association management company for several concrete-related associations until their retirement in 2001. Sally and Milt were inveterate volunteers and almost always worked together, as they did for Travelers Aid at Dulles Airport in Virginia, the National Park Service at Wolf Trap Farm Park for the Performing Arts in Vienna, Virginia, and the Las Vegas Metro Police Department after moving to Las Vegas in 2009. Music remained an integral part of their lives as long as their voices held out, and both sang in adult 'pop' choruses that Milt founded in Naugatuck, Connecticut and Lynchburg, Virginia, as well as the Towne Square Singers in Herndon, Virginia. Sally will be fondly remembered for her smile, her quiet disposition, and her love for her family and friends. The family hopes that her friends will pass her legacy forward by donating to their favorite charity.
