Today we gather with heavy hearts, but also with deep love and gratitude, to honor the life of Shirley Dennis, a devoted mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother - who we all lovingly knew as Baby.
Shirley Dennis was born on August 3, 1934, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Clifford Hendricks and Minnie O'Dell. She was raised alongside her siblings Maejuana, CliffEta, Diane, Rita, and Clifford Jr. Shirley later married Vernon Dennis, with whom she built a life rooted in family and love. She resided in Las Vegas, Nevada, where she peacefully passed away on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, at the age of 91.
To the world, she may have been Shirley Dennis, but to us, she was Baby-the heart of our family. She had a way of making everyone feel safe, loved, and seen. Her presence alone brought comfort, and her love was something you could feel without a single word being spoken.
Baby was a caretaker in the truest sense of the word. She watched over and took care of all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, always making sure everyone was fed, safe, and loved. No matter how busy or tired she was, she put family first. Her home, and her arms, were always open. Many of us grew up under her watchful eye, learning what love looks like through her actions every single day.
She taught us what unconditional love looks like. She gave without expecting anything in return.
She showed strength during hard times, grace in moments of struggle, and kindness in everything she did. Even when life wasn't easy, she carried herself with warmth and dignity.
She was the one we turned to for guidance, for laughter, and for reassurance. Her voice, her smile, and her hugs will forever live in our hearts. The lessons she taught us-about family, resilience, and love-will continue to guide us long after today.
Shirley "Baby" Dennis is survived by her loving children: Denise Anthony, Clifford Dennis, Darryl Dennis, and Elizabeth Dennis (spouse). She leaves behind nine grandchildren: Candice Rhone and Clarence Rhone (spouse); Shanae Dennis-Starks and Ashley Starks (spouse); Tyneesha Dennis; Cherish Blackwell and Devin Blackwell (spouse); Alvin Clark III; Amber Dennis; Diamond Smith and Daniel Smith (spouse); Darryl Dennis Jr.; and Tyler Dennis.
She is also survived by six great-grandchildren: Tray-Von Rhone, Braylin Blackwell, Zayden Clark, Taniyah Rhone, Xander Clark, and Amory Blackwell, as well as one great-great-granddaughter, Ta'rayah Rhone, all of whom were a source of immense pride and joy in her life.
Although our hearts ache from her absence, we are comforted knowing that her love never leaves us. Baby lives on in our memories, in the stories we tell, in the values she passed down, and in the love we share with one another.
Today, we say goodbye, but we also say thank you. Thank you, Baby, for loving us the way only you could. Thank you for the sacrifices you made, the joy you brought, and the legacy you leave behind.
We will miss you more than words can express. Rest peacefully, Baby. You will forever be loved, forever missed, and never forgotten.
